The governing body of motorsport, the FIA, decided that it was necessary to make some changes to the technical aspects of regulations for formula one race cars.

One of the regulations that has changed over times is the fact that teams will be allowed to change the tyres during the race. A new qualifying format for Formula one was also decided in London by the Formula One Commission. A major change in the rear wing design was also introduced in 2007.

The new qualifying format is going to be set up to work in to three different phases. First phase will make the five slowest cars dropout after 15 minutes. The Second phase will allow for another five cars to dropout after 15 more minutes. Phase three will allow the remaining cars to compete in a 20 minutes session for the top position on the grid. This will allow for more exposure for the smaller teams as well as allow for more diversity in the grid which will allow more overtaking in the race.

The new rear wing design allows drivers to follow more closely prompting more opportunities for passing. This new regulation is a step in the right direction because a lot of changes in the past have been to slow the cars down. This will increase the entertainment level during the race and is sure to lead to increased sales of race tickets as well as Formula One corporate hospitality options as a whole.

The 2008 season saw a new rule being implemented. It was that only one tyre supplier could supply all formula one racing teams. This will level the playing field and will help the entertainment level as well. Some of changes for the motor and weight of the car have been made too.

The car may only weigh with the driver included 550kg. The engines are now 2.4 litre V8 motors with 4 valves per cylinder. The maximum number of gears is seven with a minimum of four. The wheel width has also been changed to 390 to 450mm on the front and 490 to 505mm on the rear. The engine weight must be a minimum of 95kg. Communications must be open to the FIA and broadcasters. Competitors may only have up to 30,000km of testing in one year.

Overall, it will be interesting to see how the cars perform while adhering to the new regulations, especially at new circuits like Valencia and, in particular, the F1 Singapore which will be held at night.
